  3. Instructions

  5. To install demos - click on the CD icon - that should launch Software
  6. Manager and let you install the demos. If this doesn't work, then manually
  7. launch Software Manager and type /CDROM/dist into the Available Software
  8. Field, then press Lookup.

  10. The demos will install into /usr/demos. From that directory type:

  12.         ./portalis
  13.  
  14. To navigate click to the right or the left of a portal to turn, on a portal
  15. to go into it (or execute it), and on the floor to go back.
  16.  
  17. There is Portalis help located to the left of the Infinite Reality portal -
  18. there is both Portalis Dev. Help and Portalis Help...

  28. These demos are designed and tested for Onyx2 machines (running IRIX 6.4 or
  29. IRIX 6.5). Trying to run demos on any other machines will probably not work.
  30. Running on an older version of IRIX will probably not work either.
  31.  
  32. These demos are designed to run at 1280x1024. Running at other resolutions
  33. is somewhat supported, but can still give inferior results - demos running
  34. slowly, demos not running full screen. The demos are set up to run at any
  35. resolution as much as possible, but running at 1280x1024 is still the
  36. recommendation.

  38. For demos that must be run on a 24" monitor (wider aspect ratio) the best
  39. resolution to use is 1280x720. This is know as the HDTV format 720p. Save
  40. this .vfo file in /usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/dg4/vfo and use ircombine...

  42. These demos are designed to run in at least 512M of memory. A few will work
  43. with less but will not run well. A few demos have options that will use up
  44. to 1G of memory, but they are clearly marked. Portalis will detect the
  45. amount of system memory and only run demos that have enough memory.

  47. These demos prefer 2 RM boards. The demos will all run with 1 RM but many
  48. will not run at full speed. 4 RM boards is even better but most demos will
  49. work fine with 2. For those demos that absolutely require a certain number
  50. of RMs, Portalis will check the system configuration and warn of problems as
  51. needed.

  53. Many of these demos require 64M texture memory RMs. (But Portalis will check
  54. the system configuration and allow running any that don't have this
  55. requirement.)

  57. These demos are set up to run on a single pipe machine, with a mouse and
  58. audio (only a few demos support audio). Support for multiple pipes
  59. (including support for SEOS and Panoram) and other input devices (like a
  60. Flybox) are now available. Portalis will prompt for configuration
  61. information (Portalis does as much automatic detection as possible).

  65. The number given is the size of the inst image. This will give you a general
  66. idea of how long the demo will take to install - but not of how large the
  67. demo will be on disk.
